You searched for your own business on Google… and it is nowhere to be found. No listing, no map pin, nothing. It is frustrating — and it is costing you customers every day.
The good news: in most cases, a business missing from Google is caused by one of a handful of fixable problems. Work through the seven causes below in order, and you will usually find your culprit.
1. Your Google Business Profile Is Not Verified
This is the most common reason. If you created a Google Business Profile but never completed verification, Google will not show it publicly.
How to check: Sign in at business.google.com. If you see a “Verify” button or a verification prompt, your profile is unverified.
How to fix: Complete verification — usually by video, phone, or postcard depending on your business type. Video verification is now the default for most new profiles. Have your business signage, tools, or vehicle ready to show.
2. Your Profile Was Suspended
Google suspends profiles that break its guidelines — keyword-stuffed business names, virtual office addresses, duplicate listings, or fake reviews can all trigger it. A suspended profile disappears from search and Maps entirely.
How to check: Your dashboard will show a “Suspended” notice.
How to fix: Identify and correct the violation first, then submit a reinstatement appeal with supporting documents. I have written a full step-by-step guide: how to fix a suspended Google Business Profile.
3. Your Business Information Is Inaccurate or Incomplete
A profile with a wrong address, missing hours, no categories, or no description gives Google little confidence — and little to rank. Thin profiles get filtered out.
How to fix: Fill in every field: correct business name (your real-world name, no keyword stuffing), full address, phone number, website, hours, primary and secondary categories, services, and photos. A fully completed profile is the foundation of Google Business Profile optimization.
4. You Are Searching from the Wrong Location
Google personalizes local results by the searcher’s location. If you are searching from home 20 miles away, your business may simply not be in that searcher’s visible radius — even though nearby customers see you fine.
How to check: Search in an incognito window, or better, check your profile’s performance data in the Google Business dashboard to see actual impressions.
5. Your Category Is Wrong
Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals. If you chose a vague or incorrect category, Google will not match you to the searches your customers actually make.
How to fix: Choose the most specific primary category that describes your core business, then add relevant secondary categories. Read my guide on how to choose the right Google Business Profile category.
6. You Have a Duplicate Listing
Two profiles for the same business split your reviews and confuse Google — which often suppresses both. Duplicates happen after rebrands, address changes, or when staff create extra listings.
How to fix: Search Maps for your business name and address variants. Claim duplicates and request removal, or merge them through Google support.
7. It Is Simply Too New
A brand-new profile can take days to a few weeks to appear consistently, especially while verification is processing. If everything above checks out and the profile is under a month old, give it time — and keep the profile active with posts and photos in the meantime.
Still Not Showing Up?
If you have worked through all seven and your business is still invisible, there may be a deeper issue — a soft suspension, a filtered listing, or a local SEO problem on your website itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for a new business to show up on Google?
Usually a few days after verification is complete, but it can take up to a few weeks for a brand-new profile to appear consistently in search and Maps.
Why is my business on Google Maps but not in Google Search?
This usually means the profile exists but is too weak to rank — incomplete information, no reviews, or a category mismatch. Completing and optimizing the profile normally resolves it.
Can I pay Google to show my business?
Google Business Profiles are free and cannot be boosted by payment. Google Ads can put you at the top as a sponsored result, but organic visibility has to be earned through a complete, compliant, active profile.
